It's wonderful to be part of such a terrific family.

The intent of this, separate, "Bulletin Board" page is to make it a little easier to share our experiences, thoughts and even jokes and stories with one another. While my goal from the beginning was to include a BB like this, events overtook plans and we went in a different direction. I did learn a lot, however, from getting Grandma's Update Page organized, so it's time to move ahead here. Please feel free to use this page as a sort of Sticky Yellow Note, as a postcard to family, or whatever. Just keep in mind that EVERYONE can see what you write, including all of our Grandmas, if they so choose.

First order of business. Family chat: Date and Time suggestions, please.

What a cool idea!I suggest Sunday evening say 7pm my time for a chat. Weekends work well. Also a big hello to everyone from Josh in Taiwan. He can get email, check the secured section of the site for his address. He would also love regular mail, a letter can go with a normal first class stamp. Call me for a mailing address.

Tom, I started looking at Medicare and have more questions than answers. Cindy says mom has part B insurance. If I understand right, she must be paying a monthly premium for that, correct? Also, does she have Medicaid? I think she would be eligible. I know Jane does. I looked into the care center in Afton. They are not a Medicare participating facility. Also if I'm getting it right, Medicare will pay for skilled nursing needs ie respiratory/dialysis etc, but not custodial care like dressing, bathing, bathroom assistance etc in a nursing home setting. It looks like the longer she stays in the hospital, the higher her share of the cost will be. It goes up significantly after 60 days. Maybe we should be talking to someone with experience like a billing person at the hospital. What do you think?

Thursday 5/19/2005 2:31:25 PM (PDT) George No Address Left
I agree with Nancy. What I've learned so far here is that Medicare pays for up to 20 days of rehab after the hospitalization. After that it becomes the family responsibility. What does it mean that the Afton Care Center is not a medicare participating facility?

George, did you mean May 22nd? Is time slipping away from you so quickly?

Thursday 5/19/2005 8:49:59 PM (PDT) George No Address Left
All you artists out there. We need a logo. A picture or drawing that uniquely captures the spirit of the family. My artistic talents are amply on display already, so you can easily see why I need help here. Thanks in advance.

May, June, Who's keeping track? Besides, I have the power to EDIT anything you say…..

I have a great photo of Mom and Dad that might make a good logo for our site. It was taken up Grover Park many years ago, I was about 14 years old. Jerry Chandler Sr took pics of all of us, you may remember the day. Problem, I have no way to scan it and send it on. Suggestions?

Friday 5/20/2005 6:45:26 AM (PDT) George No Address Left
Nancy, Mail it to me, I'll scan it and send it back.

Friday 5/20/2005 10:42:10 AM (PDT) Cindy No Address Left
Nancy and family. The person I spoke with was the medicare/medicaid biller at our county hospital. She explained to me that medicare is the federal medical program we get at age 65. Medicaid is a state program, each state is a little bit different. Previously she plugged in moms medicare number directly into the medicare system and it showed she has both A and B which can be taken directly out of her check so she does not need to make a payment. That is what the system showed. She said A pays inpatient for 60 days and B pays the doctor with a $912 deductible. After 60 days up to 90 days there is a daily co-pay of $228 and 91 to 150 days a larger co-pay. After 150 days mom is responsible for all cost inpatient. She said medicaid will often pay the copays so we need to contact the Wyoming dept of health and welfare and apply. She said we may be able to do that on line. Again each state is different. She should quality for the medicaid services. When mom goes to outpatient services everything changes. She suggested going to the medicare.gov website and looking at that information. She said it also has a great search and question area. I called Jenny again today and had her pull mom up in the system and it does show her having both A and B so unless mom cancelled the B $78.20 is coming out of her social security checks each month to pay for that. It is quite complicated and Jenny is very helpful but suggests we apply for the medicaid through Wyoming. I will look into this when I get back to work Monday. My indigent department can help as they deal with medicare/medicaid in Idaho. This should get us started and if I can help answer anymore questions let me know. I would have gotten back sooner but I just spent a wild four days with my 93 year old grandmother. My mom and I ended up having to call 911 and after spending some time in the hospital with her we had to put her into a long term care facility so we are learning many things about the care system. Maturing is pretty interesting. Cindy

Friday 5/20/2005 10:56:22 AM (PDT) Cindy No Address Left
Oh, mother also has a perdiem policy through Physicians Mutual that I don't know a whole lot about but they said it paid a flat $82 per day room benefit/accute care. Jenny said to check with them. Sometimes you have to bill that yourself but she said the check should go to mom so that could possbily be used towards her co-pays as well.

Friday 5/20/2005 11:12:10 AM (PDT) Nancy No Address Left
Thanks Cindy, that is good news. I didn't know about the other policy. I spent some time on the Medicare web site yesterday. It is quite helpful but I couldn't find anything on what may happen to Mother's personal assets, ie would the government seize them and under what conditions.I'll keep looking.

Friday 5/20/2005 (PDT) George No
The Physicians Mutual policy is long-term care insurance (which is what the company I work for sells). LTCI is purchased, much like life or health insurance, as an indiviudal policy. Here's what I've learned about "Asset-Grabbing". The gov't. pays the monthly bill for nursing facility costs, but, at the person's death, they will attempt to recoup as much of that cost as possible from the person's estate. So, if the stay was 12 months at $5,000 per month, they'll want $60,000 from the estate. If the costs exceed the estate, the feds eat the difference. The trick is that any transfer of assets out of the person's estate prior to death is only valid if it occurs 3 years or more before thedate the person enters the facility. This is called the "Look Back Period".

Friday 5/20/2005 2:40:14 PM (PDT) Nancy No Address Left
Would a sale of the property at fair market value be considered a transfer of assets? Would the "look back" rule then apply?

Friday 5/20/2005 (PDT) George No
Probably not. The idea is that they want to prevent sham gifts.

Jack, Your math is impeccable

Friday 5/20/2005 7:58:41 PM (PDT) Allan C. No Address Left
Wait a second I'm becoming confused. Who is the smart one in this family? I suppose every 5 years we should run a consensus to determine thoughts and opinions regarding who is who and what roles they fill. Perhaps I’ve gained enough age and a small degree of wisdom, compared to you all, to nominate myself as the fisherman of the family. I know that you’ll argue pops however I did spend the last weekend of April catching 61 fish on the green river. It was for the most part a feisty catch and release outing, I can say I didn’t starve. And I agree Unca Jack, your math skills are putting you a nose ahead of competition in the running for the smarts of the family!

Friday 5/20/2005 8:11:43 PM (PDT) Nancy No Address Left
Allan, your opening remark in the last message is very telling. Becoming confused automatically puts you out of the running for smartest. As for best fisherman, I have never felt the need to pit myself against the wits and abilities of a fish so I don't really care who gets that honor. Seriously, I am not the oldest or youngest or even middle child. I am not the smartest, most successful, most talented or most accomplished. But I have a title, luckiest. I get to be a part of this amazing family.

Saturday 5/21/2005 7:44:48 AM (PDT) Emma No Address Left
Well Allan, I think you have earned, or deserve the title of fisherman in the family. Aunt Nancy, being a parent automatically puts you into the 'smartest, most successful, most talented, and most accomplished' catagory in my opinion!! For those of you that are pesty-mistic about luck, learn to live...

Saturday 5/21/2005 7:45:25 AM (PDT) Emma... sorry No Address Left

Saturday 5/21/2005 (PDT) George No
I agree that being part of this family is a very good thing. And I concede that Allan is a better fisherman than I am. It is important, though, to keep in mind who it was who taught him to fish. And also who it is who has the power to EDIT any and all posts here. I suppose that calls for a promise to use that power only for good--things like correcting spelling or removing a post if you change your mind later. As I get more experience with this stuff, I should be able to make an editing function available so you can do that yourself.

Saturday 5/21/2005 12:34:40 PM (PDT) Jack No Address Left
Nobody has ever said that about my math skills. I must show this to my wife. Impeccable! I've never been impecced before.

Saturday 5/21/2005 12:52:44 PM (PDT) George No Address Left
I'm working on the edit function, but it turns out I overlooked a critical point back there when I was setting all of this up. Apparently, I'm losing ground in the "Smart" department. So .... while it will eventually be possible to edit/delete posts individually, it's not going to happen today.

Saturday 5/21/2005 1:16:49 PM (PDT) Allan C. No Address Left
Ahh so, it appears that I've dubbed myself as being the "confused that can fish" in the family. Aunt Nancy you certainly put a smile on my face. The evolution of those smart fish has really come a long way since the last time you dueled the species. By the way, when are you going to bring those lads of yours out to the country? Your welcome any time and it’s only about 2.5 hours N.E. of your fine city. It's an amazing time of year here with 75 degree temps and 10 feet of snow in the high country. Locals say this hasn't happened for 20 years and they are very excited at the prospect of hopefully avoiding the flood and putting a damper on this drought for a while. Uncle George, you sure are asserting your power of editing here lately. Don't let the power go to your head! Hehe, anyway it's really good for me to be able to stay in touch with you all as I've found myself bogged down with work along way from family.

Saturday 5/21/2005 2:29:37 PM (PDT) Bill Brotherton No Address Left
Well Allan, if you caught 61 fish in one weekend in the same place i don't really think that you were "deuling" the smartest ones so, just keep that in mind. HAHAHA

Good stroke Bill, Do you think he caught the same fish 61 times?

I know that I cannot quality for the "smartist" title untill I can remember to hit the tab and not the enter key to start my messages. I found that I can get out of bed at 1 a.m. Phx time, catch a flight on a two prop plane, sit around in Pittsburg for a couple of hours, sit on a flight full of barking dogs and screaming children for 4.5 hours, and return to 110 Degrees of heat and not die. I will refer the fishermen children that are mine to comment, Allan. You may receive some flak from Jerry and Jim, deserved or not. Sure do love and miss all of you. Will keep you posted on the kitchen progress. The cupboards look weird without counter tops. Teaching what I do to a group of doctors and assistants proved to be scary, mostly fun, and really rewarding. I have been invited to return in September, so I think that means that I did okay. Is the chat 6 pm mt or pacific time? Jo

Saturday 5/21/2005 5:57:56 PM (PDT) George No Address Left
The chat is at 7:00PM Nancy time, so if you are in the same time zone she is, that's also 7:00pm for you. If not, it isn't. My plan is to log in around 4 and wait to see what happens :)

Still wrestling with the intermittent problem of the dreaded "Appointments Only" page when you try to submit a post. I finally experienced it myself and have a little better insight into it. The post is actually being submitted even though you get the error page. So, if you hit "Refresh" button, or if you go back and submit the same message again from the same page, you'll end up with multiple copies. Until I find the culprit and fix it, please try this instead, if you get the error: 1. Use the "BacK" arrow to get to the page where you composed your message and copy it (just in case it didn't get posted). 2. Return to the Home Page. This will clear the message. 3. Return to the message page to see if the message actually did get posted. If it did, you're golden. If not, paste it back into the message box and try again. Again, my apologies for the inconvenience.

I'm waiting, on this site until 7:00 NST so that I don't space it off and remember tomorrow morning. I just like fishing and am lucky to be able. I realize the title doesn't belong to me, just casting a bit of fun. Really just trying to lure everyone (and your poles) to my home for a visit. Ok read you all later!

I think I found my problem--apparently spelling does count. :( Please let me know if you get the error again.

Unka, would love to try fishing for those good tasting salmon. I think some day me and the old man will have to take a trip to visit you and fish! What time of year is best? Hopefully late late fall or early early spring.

I'll have to ask Alex and Alex what's best. BTW: What do you consider "early, early spring." Two months ago?

Sunday 5/22/2005 4:46:41 PM (PDT) Jim Chandler jimchandler@thejim.net
Yes, Catching 61 fish is impressive. But, catching 1 fish in a place and time where no one else is catching any, that is priceless my friends. Watching the fish come up and take the bait, is worth leaving with only that one fish. To be a fisher of souls like our fine young Josh, is to leave we ordinary men behind and step into a new level lifes great pursuits. For Amanda and Emma, god bless you and my love and best wishes to you and your families. We mere men think we are strong and impressive. But, the women of this family and any other are the glue and the true strength. Allen. I will see your 61 fish, and raise you 62 when I get a chance to meet you on the green river. 'Give me a couple days head start' ;-P Gramma. There is not a more pure or simple love than that of grandchild for their grandparents. Words cannot express how loved and appreciated you. Get well soon. My love to all. Jim

I just spoke with a Health and Family Services rep in Afton. she says the process for applying for Medicaid is quite lengthy and will require 2 or perhaps 3 visits to her office to go over all the material and resources available and a health assessment on Mom will need to be done after she is back in Wyoming. If she stays in Idaho, all this would need to be done there. She can provide us contact info if needed.I will contact Sam and see if he can go in to see her.

This is a list of things that I found out to report on: 1. Hospice is not an option for mom for in home care, they only deal with terminally ill people. 2. There is a company out of Idaho Falls called Apprea who provide durable medical equipment i.e. oxygen suplies, and send rep. to home to train patient. They are also on call for emergencies. 3. There is an assisted living center in Thayne who have CNA's available for skilled nursing in home. Medicare pays for this skilled care. 4. As we allready know, medicare will not pay for custodial care in home. 5. Nita Hirschi is a former CNA who has offered to contract with us to provide limited custodial care for mom in her home if needed. 6. The application for medicaid needs to be completed in office in Afton and will require two to three visits they also provide info on all resources available for long term care. they prefer to speak to us face to face not over the phone. I will have one of my boys sit in on the family chat tommorow.

There was a time I could put it out of mind... leave it all behind... that time is gone. Sad story. Love you all! Oh and Amanda and Em, just because you kids are pretty much my hero's, don't let it go to your heads. I'm still bigger (just kidding Ike & Derrick!), but I am. :)

I want to climb up on my soapbox for a minute, if you'll indulge me. On Grandma's page, Amanda made a reference to "Uncle George's website" and I want to set the record straight on how I feel about that. This is, in fact, OUR website. And there is a practical reason for making that distinction. Because it is ours, we can all participate and contribute in any way we see fit (within the boundaries of good taste and civility, of course) and to any degree we want. Over time, it should evolve with input from everyone; if others want to get more involved in maintaining or developing things, I'd like to see that happen as well. On the other hand, if it really were mine, it would very quickly become "all about me" and it would lose most of its value to everyone else. And that would mean I'd failed in one of my goals for the site. So, while I get to have all of the fun of pulling it together, it really isn't "mine". Of course, I can't help putting my stamp on the look and feel of things, but one of my hopes is that someone with more artistic bent will want to make it look prettier. Thanks, and now I need to get down off this soapbox, which is starting to look a bit shaky, and even a fall from this low height would hurt a lot.

Reference: George's post on Wednesday 5/25/2005 (PDT) Fact is It may be "our" website, but George is paying for the server capacity. I think whoever feels appreciative of the design and work and love put into this might want to send a few $ to help defray his expenses.

Because of my business, I would have to have the server anyway, so this is not a significant extra financial burden on me, at least not till we increase the traffic by a factor of about 100 times or so and they start to charge me more. However, I really appreciate the thought. If you want to make a contribution somewhere, how about a donation to the American Lung Association?

One of the features of the hosital website that George has linked to is that you can email Grandma Hepworth from there. There is no means for the patient to respond to your email, and there is no privacy with yours to her; the staff print it out and take it to her. All you need is her name and room number. If you don't have the room number, contact one of her children.

Wanted to go today, but am spending the day washing every bit of laundry that might have went camping with us, thanks to a skunk I named 'Smelly A*%' (it was our terrier named Roach that got sprayed oh my disgustedness). Uncle HB, do you think you could, when you get a sec, make this page printable, as well? I think Granda would enjoy reading about the 61 fish-in-one-weekend 'tale' as well other kind words of family gospel! Thanks and love to all!

Hey again. Sorry I missed your kind words during the latest chat! I wanted to say something about Memorial Day as I was trapped here working and unable to give anyone a handshake or really do much more than remembering those I've loved. I wish that grandma's brother Jack would happen to read this as I say thank you sir for those years of your life you gave to this great country. Although I've missed many chances of shaking your hand in appreciation, I've always known you as my grandma's brother the soldier! I'm sure you and my Uncle Bubba have so many good and bad stories, but Uncle Bubba did once say that those who talked the stories weren't really there. I'm not sure if any of you have watched a series of HBO movies titled 'Band Of Brothers' but you should if not. It's an amazing real life type movie that tells stories of some amazing givers who gave and gave of themselves so that we could all enjoy this love and freedom that sometimes takes gifts like this groverhepworths page to remember! Well I hope is well and I'm thinking about you all!

Amanda, try tomato juice on Roach if he is still aromatic. It is an old remedy but it works. Just rub it into his fur thoroughly and let it sit for just a minute, then give him a regular bath.:)

When Mom, Jane, and I went to Jo's for Christmas the first year after Dad died, Mom complained about how fast I was driving. Mom took a turn in Southern Utah. Needless to say she followed my example and exceeded the posted limit, HOWEVER, her "luck" was not as good as mine, and an UHP soon had her pulled over. Just as he got up to her window, she turned on her "Grandma" charm, and in her sweetest grandmotherly voice said, "Oh dang, oh dang, oh dang", and laughed a sweet granmotherly laugh, totally disarming the officer. "Do you know how fast you were driving, mam?", "Oh, yes officer, and I am sooo sorry and embarrased." "Well, slow down, and I'll let you go this time." I am in the backseat swimming for dear life to stay above the sticky, grandmotherly sweetness, and wondering how she got away with it. Mom never complained about my speed again.

I have yard work, window washing, and some indoor cleaning on the agenda and now ask for you all to send any needs or ideas this way. I'll bundle up a rake and weed eater and head for god's country come friday evening. In the last 16 years of being away from home I've never looked so foreword to returning! I hope to find the clippers and gloves that don't fit in the same spot. How about entrance? Perhaps Uncle Sam?

I am looking forward to seeing you, so you better stop by and visit. My Dad does have the key to the house and shed, so you will have to stop and visit to get them. per our chat last night, I think it would be awesome to create a memory book for Mom. Please, everyone, take a few minutes and write down your favorite memories of her as mother/grandmother/friend. perhaps include something of importance you learned from her. send it to me in an email and I will compile them for her with some pics like a scrapbook. Hopefully we can present it to her as a welcome home present. Or make a video of the messages spoken aloud while we're home. I feel strongly that it will make a difference for her. And it won't hurt any of us either!

Anyone have info on John W condition? We would like to know how things are going in Az.

Saturday 6/11/2005 10:23:00 AM (PDT) Renee Hot in AZ
John had a heart attack on Tuesday and had another stent put in. He got out of the hospital yesterday and is doing fine. We are having a birthday party for Rachel on Sunday, so it will be good for him to spend time with his daughters. We think that stress from not working, high blood sugar & cholesterol, and not taking the Plavix caused it. Otherwise we are doing well here in AZ.

Nancy has asked for contributions to a memory book for mom. You can send them to her at her prestigious email address: nancy@groverhepworths.org. Moreover, you can also contribute pictures, documents, even video or audio directly to the website by using the new upload page. Anything you want to share can be uploaded (just be aware that the larger the file, the longer it will take to upload it). We'll start using your contributions to build a picture gallery and story collection.

I have a suggestion that Nancy and I discussed last night. A memory book for Mom is a wonderful idea, but I want to see the reciprocal of it created, too. Please draw up a list of questions you want to know about Mom/Granda Hepworth/Anagene, and her life and times. We will have to prep her for it obviously, but at some near future date(s) we approach Mom with a tape recorder and video camera and ask her a compilation of the questions. It will probabley take several sessions as her strength and patience permit. But the rememberance of her legacy will be priceless.

I started working on pictures but haven't had time to get them ready. By the way, what about image dimensions, formatting issues, etc. Any guidelines to make it easier to get them posted?

Saturday 6/18/2005 3:58:54 PM (PDT) George No Address Left
Almost anything will work. Higher resolutions (300 dpi or more) are better than lower resolutions because I can always reduce them if needed. I don't have fancy photo editing software, but I can convert most formats to jpgs for the web. I can shrink large images, but growing small ones tends to make them break up. Try to keep file sizes under 5 MB (which is still pretty large).

Sunday 6/19/2005 7:14:20 PM (PDT) Tom No Address Left
You won't believe this. This morning Helen S. (Susan's mother) fell and broke her hip. She and Kay are visiting Helen's sister in Lander Wyo. and were enroute to Pocatello. She had surgery today and I understand things went OK. Sounds like they did a total hip replacement. I'll try to get more information when I can. Cindy and I had a good visit with Jane in Evanston. We went to lunch at McDonalds and took a short drive around town. Jane seems OK and is looking forward to going to SV in July. I guess we need to sort out how to get her home and back, and how to take care of her while she's home.

I realize how busy everyone is, myself included. However, I repeat my request for submissions to our memory book. So far I have 2, mine and George's. I know how difficult it is, and emotional. Please, take just a few minutes and send me a paragraph of your favorite memories of Mom and a simple thought on something you have learned from her. It doesn't need to be long, just heart felt.

Home from the funeral which was really very simple and beautiful just like grandma. She would have loved it. Your flowers were thoughtful and very pretty. It was very sweet of you all to think of me and my family and made me happy. Mother thought it was very kind and hopes someday to meet you all. I think she is finally going to retire. She will be 70 on Christmas Day this year. I will put her on a plane back to Kansas City tomorrow. I thought of you all and really missed seeing you, some of you I haven't seen for a very long time. Looked at pictures Tom took and was amazed how grown up the teens looked and how gracefully you have all aged. (Was that tactful?). Sounds like it was a great time even with the stressful discussions that were necessary. My love to you all.

Skipp McCreary remembers Alan Hepworth with great fondness and also remembers Russell wrestling. He sends this advice: that a family trust be organized of mother's heirs, that within this trust, if the property is bought at fair market value, a property line adjustment can be made with one person as owner of a section, after one years time, this section is marketable. Perhaps an enhanced septic system might be required. Love to all.

Thanks Sam. Great to have you aboard ;) I remember Skip with respect. He was tough and fair. With regard to the idea of a trust, it seems to me to be the most desirable solution. One issue remains --$$$ to make that fair market purchase.

I want everyone to know how grateful I am for my wife and family. After the chat on Sunday I felt sadness and regret that I had not spent more time with Mom. To be honest, I was a real jerk Sunday night to Danell and the kids. Monday morning Danell and I had a good talk, and decided to forgo our trip to Martins Cove and come back to Idaho Falls. I felt like I needed time alone with Mom. We asked the kids if they would support a change, and they agreed without argument. I am so thankful for a family that would sacrifice for someone who wasn't exactly deserving. I also want to thank Derrick and Amanda for allowing us to stay "One More Night" at Petersens Best Western on short notice; especially since they have company already. We are so blessed to have family that is willing to give for each other. I hope I don't offend, but I believe Heavenly Father has shown his tender mercies as we go through an extremely difficult time.

Well, my 13 month old son was running with an empty coffee can (the molded kind, so you all know I don't let my kids run around with sharp objects) and tripped over his little feet. The force of the fall put a hole about an inch long right below his bottom lip. Yes, a hole clean through to his mouth!! They put him in a papoose (straight jacket type thing) and gave him 6 stitches. As they say, boys will be boys, but good grief... I think I took it worse than he did. And although Ike was concerned as well, he was a LITTLE proud that his first set of stitches was 6, and not 1 or 2!! The stitches come out on Monday. Allan, hope you are safe and well. My love to all.

Sunday 7/24/2005 9:30:00 AM (PDT) George No Address Left
Emma. Glad it wasn't any worse. Take good care of that little guy and keep him off coffee until at least the age of 12.

Sunday 7/24/2005 10:21:03 AM (PDT) Nancy No Address Left
Emma, Josh did almost the same thing at a slightly younger age. He feel from the bench in church and split his mouth on a floor heater vent. I remember the papoose thing vividly. Pete was a wreck that day. My advice: write down these things in a journal, especially how you felt. It becomes a treasure after the pain is gone.

Monday 7/25/2005 11:05:49 PM (PDT) Allan C. No Address Left
Em, sorry to hear about the little man! Hope he is doing good! He's got a good head start on me in the stitches catagory. Sorry HWMB for no call. Busy busy!! Pop's, hope all is well and sorry no call for a while! Maybe I talked to you a few days ago but it's the time of year when things outside of day to day stress begin to blur!! Also Em, give ma my love and hope she is good! Love you all...

I need a favor. Check the Phone and Email lists for you and your family. Let me know if there are further additions or corrections I need to make there. I 've updated everything I have so far. However, due to an unavoidable "operator error", some of my email addresses have taken a long vacation somewhere out in the ether.

I talked to Uncle Homer and Aunt Cindy last night. They're both fine, but uncle Homer had just returned from the hospital when he returned my call. He had bypass surgery about a month ago. Yesterday he experienced some problems and decided to go get checked out to be sure everything was okay. Anyway, we chatted briefly and I got a phone number and email address for them.

I am taking Mom(Helen S.)and Dad(Kay S.)to Idaho Falls tomorrow. We will be visiting Anagene. The grandchildren....Allan, Amanda & Emma...have two Grandmothers who in the last months have both had to have hip replacement surgery, both have been diagnosed with emphysema and both had some sort of infection to fight off. Mom was able to receive immediate care, which I think made her physically and mentally able to heal a little faster. She walks with a walker or uses a wheelchair, carrying her oxygen on a dolly behind her Dad is with her at all times. She has certainly got her spunk back! Thank you all for sharing your good thoughts and a special thank you to & for my children who stepped up without a thought and did what they could to help through all their trials in the last months!

Well, Tarzan (Sir Derick Hotelier Par Excellance) was cutting dead tree limbs from our big Weeping Willow in the back yard, when the ladder slipped out from underneath him. 20 ft later and a not-so-smooth trip to the Er has left him with stitches, bumps, an assortmant of really rather colorful bruises, a sprained left wrist and broken right elbow. (Not to mention feeling like he. . .fell out of a tree!) A visit with the orthopedic surgeon Monday will answer the possibility of surgery on the elbow. Needless to mention, Derick is royally grounded. Literally! Love to all

They will re-xray next Monday to make sure the bone hasn't moved, and I guess things could change, but seems unlikely at this point. He is getting along fairly well now (from the ground, I might add) and will probably be going back to work next week on limited release. His Grandfather Peterson has purchased a pull saw for him!! Also, for the curious minded out there... http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/ashley/fire/wfu_fires/sheep_creek/index.shtml It's been my home for the past 3 weeks and I'm finally home for a day off. Understand there is mixed emotion with regards to allowing lightning fires to burn (i,e, Yellowstone 1988), but my opinion is that it's the best thing to do. Lodgepole pine is a fire dependent species! This is also the Ashley N.F.'s biggest 'Fire Use' fire and also the first outside of the wilderness which is an amazingly huge deal! Ok again love to you all!!!!

Another sad pet story from the Sutherland residence. Ike tried really hard to save an orphaned baby bird. He built a little nest and Kiya tried feeding it bugs and stuff. Unfortunately, the poor thing did not survive the night. Options for Max the black cat are sure looking bright though.

Phil Kelley, Jane's case manager from Mountain Regional Services, called yesterday (Monday 22). He said they had taken Jane to a foot doc to see about her bunion. The doctor said the bunion is very severe and is causing Jane lot's of pain (no kidding). He said corrective footwear would not help and is recommending surgery. The Dr. is supposed to call me to get approval and provide more information. I guess I have mixed feelings. Jane needs to be able to walk without pain but I understand recovery is long and difficult. I'll pass on any information.

Tuesday 8/23/2005 4:16:40 PM (PDT) George No Address Left
Tom: my limited experience with bunions tells me neither course is pleasant. Surgery will not be pleasant nor recovery quick, but the constant foot pain must be very hard on her.

Seriously, sit down, open your email, type 2 paragraphs (or so) and hit send. should take about 10 minutes. You who are her grandkids are not off the hook here. I really want this to be a birthday gift, not a hope it gets done in time for Christmas gift. Also, I am missing the regular messages and updates from all of you that used to come in every day or so. I ran into two old, familiar faces over the weekend. I saw, and spoke to briefly, Neil and Nelda Tippets. They have aged very well, seem quite healthy, just are much older than I remember them! They have fond memories of our family and offered a heartfelt and loving "Hello" to all of us. Their son Jerry was with them. I don't know him, but he said to say "Hi" also.

Wednesday 10/5/2005 11:30:28 AM (PDT) Nancy No Address Left
I sent the memory book with pages from everyone who had sent something to me. I arranged so that other pages can be easily added, so we can send her other letters, messages etc and add to her book. I think it would be nice to send additions for special occasions. For example, memories of Christmas' past would be fun to add as a Christmas greeting. This means those of you who haven't written anything to me yet (you know who you are) can still write something and contribute. It turned out pretty nice. We have some writing talent hidden amongst the grand daughters in this family!

It's good hear from you all. We're all doing fine up this way. Beth is an adult. Congratulations. Oh, and join the rest of us poor working stiffs paying taxes. LOL. Glad to hear the Rock's surgery is finally scheduled. We'll be praying it all works out. Lyndsey is working two jobs and taking physics and some kind of math involving "derivatives" and a study partner named "Rick", so we don't see a lot of her these days. Yolanda started teaching a Spanish class one night a week at one of the local community colleges. It's been fun so far, but it makes for a long day on Mondays. I visited a "large, local software company" a couple of weeks ago to preview the next version of a major software program that you all probably use (wink). Bill, my publisher is starting to talk about updating the book based on that next version. That software package will be very different and some of you will like it a lot and some of you won't. Bill was here for dinner while he was in town to visit "large, local software company". He is agonizing because he has literally thousands of screenshots in his authors' books that will be obsolete about this time next year. It's a lot of work to replace them all. I can't decide if I'm looking forward to the re-write or not. Take care of yourselves and stay in touch.

Sure is nice to hear from some of you once again. Beck, do you really feel old? Cuz if so... you can't imagine how... Amanda feels! Oh just kiddin my 30 year young sista! I myself just turned a very youthful 28. And you Aunt Nan? Since we share the same special day? How's this for 'where'd the time go'... we (my family) moved to Pocatello when I was 10. Been here for 18 years now. WOW!!! The news update here: biggest thing right now is my mama (Susan). Her parents relocated to Kingman where Ken lives. She recently found out that Ken and another gentleman (apparently from The Valley) have started their own surveying? company and where in need of a bookkeeper/accountant. So they offered, and my mom accepted. She will be moving there in 2+ weeks. Doing some bookkeeping as well as taking some extra good care of Kay and Helen. She is extremely excited, and somewhat nervous. Amanda and I are going to have a rough time, but we know she will do great. Ike is still hard at work... when isn't he? My babes both have the wonderful '12' hour stomach flu.. haven't changed my clothes this many times since I was a teenager! Well, thats the happenins on this end. Glad to hear that everyone everywhere is doing fair to great! Rock, just remember to keep your middle finger in closed fist. We sure wouldn't want you to accidently lose it! LOL! Spent the weekend in Grover. Mother seems to be doing well and is quite content. She has lots of orders for baby blankets and spends her days knitting and playing solitaire/yahtzee (except the solitaire game seems to be malfunctioning. Sam is taking great care of her and sees her nearly every day. I hung the yellow gate and finished the east end of the rail fence where the barn was. I also turned off the water, pressurized the house water lines and put some antifreeze in the traps and toilets. I think we will leave the living room heater on low through the cold months, hopefully keep the house 50-60F.

Hello everyone! I do apologize for not keeping in touch via this great system. Have been so busy! Myself, Jacquelyn and Taryn all went back to school, and I have had to inquire about putting in a 6th drive, as my overdrive is getting worn out already. I am so thankful to my husband for being an awesome support to all of us. Jac is doing great in kindergarten and is picking up on reading a few words. Talk about a weird happy-but-sad at the same time feeling for me! How she is growing. Taryn is enjoying her preschool at the Calvery Chapel. She is growing socially like a little butterfly. I am doing good myself; enjoy my classes and happy to have a life again! Derick is doing great also. He stays busy at work then busy busy with home repairs. Rock's surgery is still coming up next week on 11/3. He saw our family doc and is found healthy enough to go through the procedure. He is getting a little anxious. the boys are all fine. I have been working overtime to keep up on bills. Workers comp denied Rock's claim for the injury. They say it was a pre existing condition. We hired an attorney but it will be at least 6 months before a resolution is reached. At least the lawyer only gets paid on a contingency basis. Happy Halloween!!

For many years, my one remaining vanity (other than my voice) has been my eyesight. Seven years ago I experienced a partial collapse of that house of cards when I needed reading glasses. Yesterday, the fell wind of creeping age has completely undermined the vestige of that vanity. Yesterday, sadly, with no fanfare, and with no little discomfort to my ego, I was given the prescription for bifocals. I have achieved something I had wished to avoid, the permanent moniker of "Four-eyes". No longer can I secretly, within my heart, go "Nah nah nah nah nah nah, I don't have to wear glasses" to my siblings. The end of one era has come, and the dawning of another comes in about 10 business days. Creep on you ever advancing age, you may be taking my eyesight, but you will never take my hair... oops, to late. (Now where did I put those dang glasses again.)

Hello Everyone! It's that time of year when we all are thinking about the gifts we need to remember to get for so and so, when we are busy writing Christmas cards to mail by this day so they get where they are going in time, busy doing everything and anything that is involved with the holiday season. So, with that in mind, I am writing my Christmas card here, as I have run out of time to mail any...:) A wonderful, hard year it has been. Here at our house, Kiya has 'officially' stopped wearing diapers. At 32 months (2 1/2) I am very proud of her! She woke up one day and told me "no more diapers for me, I am a big girl".. little does she know how I miss those days already. Koby, well, his days (at 1 1/2) consist of.. "Koby sit down, Koby get off of that before you.. Koby don't pull the cat's tail like that, Koby..." About a month ago, I put his bottle in the freezer so I could hold on to it... Ike threw it out a couple days ago. So, my babies are now toddlers, growing into 'kids'. Ike is still as busy as ever, trying to get our new place ready as well as a total kitchen renovation elsewhere. A HUGE congratulations to my sister (Amanda) for finishing her first semester back to school with success!! Thank you Aunt Jo for carrying on such a thoughtful, heart-filled gift. I to remember the soup boxes well. A very special thank you to Unca George, I can't remember a time when the family actually kept in touch so often then they do now! What a wonderful gift! So with all of that in mind, remember that when you say Merry Christmas to family, friends, or passer-bys, put some meaning into it! From our house to yours, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and ALL OUR LOVE! Em

Emma has set a wonderful example for all of us, again. Our year has been challenging but we have many blessings. Josh will be calling home on Sunday, I am already crying as I think about it. David is now taller than I so forever more I will be the shortest in our house. That brings tears also because his days as a child are over. Bill is planning his graduation and college days, more tears for me. Jim works and shoulders as much of my cares as he can. I often cry tears of gratitude for him. Mother moved out of her home and into the last journey of her life. You all have cried with me. Rock struggles each day with pain and frustration. I feel we have to adjust to life being this way for a long time to come. Still, I am happy and excited for Christmas and optimistic about the future for all of us, including all of you far away. Life is good. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and ask that instead of 'having' a happy holiday, you give someone else happiness by giving of yourselves. I promise you will be blessed if you do. Look out 2006, here we come!

Hey I just wanted to say Hi to everyone and remind you how much I love you all. Work is going really good and my manager has me doing special projects on the team. I have lots of new friends and a new church job, I am in the nursery. I feel so old now that I have a full time job and pay bills! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Love You All!

Mom told me she would like some more pages for her memory book. Everyone, not just immediate family, is welcome to send something. Childhood memories, special occassions, funny stories, sentimental moments, anything at all. It doesn't have to be just about Mom. She loved reading the pages we sent and would love to have more to rekindle her memories of past days. You can email them to me or send them directly to her. We have such a precious opportunity to fill her days with something special, let's not let it get away.

Hey, sorry I can't chat, although I wish I could. I don't know if I told you all but I got a new job. It is still at 1800CONTACTS, but in a different department. I'm not considered part of the call center anymore, although I am still on the phones. I deal with online customers. If they have problems online then they can call in and I help talk them through it over the phone. The funny thing is, I'm not that internet savy. I mean I can do my own thing and I can navigate okay online, but I'm not really good at it. Not like some people I know. They trained me on our site only, so I can do that site really good. Sorry I am writing so long. I am hoping that you guys will write this much too. I want to hear what is going on in all of your lives! My love to all! Beth

Good to hear from you Beth. Congratulations on the new job. We're all mostly good, although the last week has been a bit on the difficult side. Penny, the dog, had a seizure on Sunday and spent the night at the doggy clinic. She's almost 16 and we can only anticipate more such episodes. Otherwise, things are good. I recently made a change in the database behind the pages. I don't see any real improvement in speed, but I'd appreciate any feedback.

We got some good news today. The independent doctor who examined Rock has determined that his injury was sudden onset and work related. Our attorney says that Workers Comp has no alternative but to capitulate and pay on our claim. What that means is, they will pay him lost wages from 9/1/05 through whatever date he is released to go back to work. They will also pay any and all medical expenses not covered by our insurance including mileage to doctors appts etc. And finally, the doctor gave him a 17% disabilty rating which will mean a small cash settlement based on his decreased ability to earn. Bottom line is we ain't gonna get rich, but we should be able to pay off the bills.

Thursday 3/2/2006 3:32:25 PM (PDT) Jack No Address Left
Hooray Nancy! Just getting out from underneath the bills will be a huge relief. Anything extra is icing. Enjoy it. What is Rock's long term prognosis, then, for getting back to work?

The concensus among the docs now is that the nerve was pinched for too long and is either extrememly slow to recover or is permanently damaged. In other words, still don't know exactly what to expect. His neurologist says 3 more months at home and that may change pending the results of the latest MRI.He may never drive a truck again, so who knows what the next part of life will bring?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATEY! I LOVE YOU!

Sunday 3/5/2006 11:24:52 PM (PDT) Em J No Address Left
Everytime I get on here, I will say the same thing... It is so awesome to get on here and say "hey, My Aunt Nancy and Rock have a little less financial stress now, or, hey, it's my cousin Katey's birthday (happy one to you)"... How I love it!! Well Aunt Nanc, everything happens for a reason, and if Rock cannot drive again, there is something other that he is supposed to venture upon. Here is 'The Sutherland's' latest on blessings... we recently took on buying a new"er" double wide mobile home, not knowing the extent of..water damage, plumbing problems, past animal-...leakage, etc... we have put in many, many man hours. Including blood sweat and tears! A huge thanks to my daddy (Tom) for babysitting my babes ALOT. We filed our taxes knowing, or 'assuming' we'd lose most, if not all of it from recent-past finacial upsets. Amazingly, we got a phone call saying we could keep it all. With that, we're able to finish things at the 'new house' and will be moving in 1 to 2 weeks. That is our "Hidden" blessing! Now I am going to get a little emotional, if ya'all can bear it. If my dad (Tom) has mentioned to you in chats, which I am sorry I haven't been to lately, about my sister (Amanda), you'll know where I am going. She has been in alot of pain lately.. for awhile.. and after many, many doctors appointments and blood work was told she might have Lupus. My sister is my best friend, and I know in my heart of hearts that it is not Lupus. As of now, they (doctors) still do not know what is going on with her. At one $700 doctor's appointment she was told she was just tired, not sleeping well at night!! I am asking for your prayers. She is starting to lose her belief in what she has been given (not that I blame her). She has this incredible inner strength, has had it all our lives, but she has buried it somewhere along this hard journey. She is a beautiful woman, a wonderful wife, a 'how I want to raise my kids' kinda mommy, an awesome sister, and even went back to school... it goes on and on.. !!! I am devastated that someone somewhere has taken all that away from her by saying 'hey, there's something wrong with your body'. Please, please send her your prayers. Give her the strength to regain her strength and slap this, or whatever this is, in the face! Oh my goodness, if you could see me now! SNIFF SNIFF...I love you sista! So, my mom, (Susan) moved to Kingman, Arizona to take care of her aging parents and get closer to her brother. She is doing very well. Very healthy and happy I am glad to say. My Grandmother (Helen Shumway) has her on again off again days, but seems in fair health. And last, but SO not least, Allan, we miss you and yours very much! Kiya loves to look at pictures and points you out first everytime (Uncle Allan)! We hope to see you and Hannah and Donovan for our "Open House" party.. any time from now till March 2007! WOW.. so I just wrote a chapter in a novel, but might I say again.. it's so awesome to get on here and say... so that's how their doing.. Rock, I hope you find yourself happy in whatever it is you decide to venture upon. Unca George, Aunt Yoly and Linds, I hope that your beloved Penny doesn't have any more episodes, and finds her last adventure a sweet one! Unca Jack, what's going on with you??? Miss you and yours much too!! With all that said, my love to all!! Emma

Sunday 3/5/2006 11:32:40 AM (PDT) Beth No Address Left
Emma, thanks for letting me know. I had no idea! Amanda I am so sorry to hear that what you are going through. If it is Lupus, which I hope not, I have an Aunt who has it. She got it from a blood transfusion. I could see what she does to help the symptoms. Just let me know what I can do to help, and I would be more than happy to do it. I love you! Also, I know you don't know my Grandpa Hoopes, but he is not doing so well. My mom hopes that he can make it through the summer. Dad thinks within the next 6 months. Just to let you all know. On a happier note, I have been talking, well texting, Brock. He seems to be doing good. He did say that Choir is keeping him busy. I love ya'll tonz!

I know, I know, here am getting "churchy", but, consider getting a priesthood blessing Amanda. You are loved more than you know. Same to you Rock. You will be in our prayers. Emma, you are the best "Em" I know. Your parents did something right, because you and your siblings turned out so well. As a side note, the pictures I sent to George are of my family with our two Japanese exchange students Koh (with the $60 felt cowboy hat), and Kohei. We enjoyed them very much. The other picture is Janell and Nicole in their flower girl dresses for their biological father's wedding. Our two princesses!

Pictures? It turns out I AM an idiot after all. I keep getting these weird messages in my email that say somebody sent something and I delete them cause I think they're spam, only they're not. They're the automatic messages I set up to let me know somebody posted a new picture for the picture page and I should go add them to the page. And so now I feel TWICE as stupid cause I set up the whole automated email thingee in the first place and forgot what it was for.

Amanda, my darling, you are loved more than you can imagine. I learned a long time ago that discouragement is the biggest and best tool of the adversary, so please continue to struggle against it. Shame on that ignorant doctor!!!!! There are answers available if we continue to search. Congrats on the move EM. I love my kitchen soo much. the best advise I have it to decorate in colors that you love so you will be peaceful there.Jack, don't you have room in your house for that piano. It would be such a family treasure. It is so good to hear from Beth and Becky also. Mom sent me the clip from the paper about Katey's graduation Way to go all of you. I am curious agout that piano. I am not really sure it was grandma hepworth's. let's ask sam to ask mom about it. I was told that Grandmother Anna Philena Mathewson Hepworth purchased the Sterling Concert Grand in 1929 for the sum of ten dollars. She had the kids learn to play and my father hated the lessons but took them anyway. I dont know if we acquired the piano at the time of Grandmas going into the nursing home or if it was before she went. I was told that Aunt Alice wanted the piano but my father wouldnt let her have it and it has been in our family since. It was made between 1901 and 1905 according to the serial number. It has a solid steel back on it and weighs between 1100 and 1300 pounds. It is beautifully carved but has a few broken keys. The keys are ivory covered and there are some names carved in the side. They are ours as children. One of the keys used to fix it is marked 1895 in pencil. As my father is deceased I have no one to ask so must go by what I have been told over the years. I only heard my father play it one time and that was in a fit of rage. He could play quite beautifully and it is a shame that no one has heard its beautiful tone for all of these years.

I attended Gerald's services today. Sam gave the invocation, Paula and sister Sandy gave the life sketch, the grand kids sang primary songs and the three brothers all spoke. It was very nice service and, as they claimed Gerald would have wanted, not too long. Lots of grandkids everywhere. You cannot believe how much snow there is in SV. It's reminiscent of the good old days when we had to wade through waist deep snow three miles to get to school across the highway.

Becky is a microbiologist! I get to brag about that even though I have no idea what it means. Don't we have an amazing family? Things are looking up for us as well. Rock is enjoying physical therapy and we are getting long awaited financial relief. David just registered for his 9th grade year, although it is still at the middle school, he is truly a freshman. We bought him an electic guitar and he is signed up for a guitar class next year. I hope I don't regret it.

Spoke with Jo and Nancy. Very positive news about Renee. Jerry was in the room with the doctor this morning and was extremely pleased with Renee's response to strength testing. She may be up walking by next week. Nancy and Rock arrived safely. She is "shepherding" JoAnna, making sure she is eating, bathing, changing clothes. One story that I think is pertinent. The first EMT on scene was LDS, and recognized Renee. He was able to give her a blessing then and there. Heavenly Father was watching over her in an hour of need.

Each day that passes brings changes good and difficult. Renee is still improving physically and although we are grateful that she is out of danger it will be many long months of recovery for her. The many people touched by this tragedy are struggling in their own grief and sometimes there is tension. We are so lucky to have a strong support system in each other. Prayer is so important and it is also important to remember that we are the hands that do the work of answering the prayers. Please help each other all you can.

Dr. Theodore says RENEE WILL WALK AGAIN!!! I am so overwhelmed. It will take several months of in residence rehab. Maybe that is a blessing that will allow her to heal her grief along with her body. Because she is getting moved to rehab tomorrow, she will have a pass to attend the funeral, which is tentatively scheduled for Thursday or Friday. It is hard to wait so long but Jerry Sr. has been helping John and it is mostly arranged. Thanks for all the messages please keep them coming. I will print them for Renee. Please keep praying for her. We love you all. Thanks for the little rule break, Elder B. It meant so much. we will update Love and gratitude to everyone. JoAnna

I just returned home from the hospital. Renee is now living in the rehab unit at St. Joseph's hospital. I will get the address. She can receive mail, and will be internet active in a couple of weeks. The funeral is planned for Thursday April 6. It will be in Buckeye, AZ. It is hard to have to wait for the funeral, but Renee will be able to attend the service. I am so grateful for this family. we are so blessed to have each other. love to all JoAnna

Rock and I are home safely. Long drive. It was hard to leave my sister this morning. Her shoulders are hardly strong enough to carry the load she is bearing. Luckily, she has a loving husband and 2 strong sons and many loving friends. We had a good visit with Jerry and his kids last night. They are beautiful little ones. Please pray for Rachel as well as Renee. Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

I just spoke with Jo, she sounds tired. Renee has some physical/medical setbacks. She has an intestinal blockage which is extremely painful for her. And there is a blood clot in one of her lungs. It is not life threatening if they treat it quickly and correctly. They have not moved her out of the rehab unit to treat her and hopefully they won't so she won't lose her bed there.

dear ones. Life does go on. What a difficult time. Renee is making great progress. the current assessment is that she will be in facility rehab for approximately 8 weeks. then who knows what will come. it is really an adventure in the rehab unit. approximately 60 patients with all levels of abilities, both physical and brain injuries and strokes. she had her first shower and hair wash yesterday. oh, the things we take for granted, clean hair. her spirits are good for the time being. it is such a great blessing to have Tom here for a few days. he went to the funeral home with me today. I couldn't have done it without him. will post more tomorrow. love to all Jo

For those wanting to send flowers, the funeral home address is: Greer-Wilson Funeral Home 5921 West Thomas Road Phoenix, AZ 85033 As an alternative, I would suggest a donation to help with funeral costs. It's questionable whether there will be enough from insurance and other benefits to recoup mortuary and cemetary expenses. The last thing Joanna and family need is to worry about money. Also, it may be several weeks before benefits are actually available, so they are having to front the money. If we all pitch in, we can each share a little of this. Anyone wanting to contribute can call or contact an immediate family member for address info.

The funeral was a sad occasion, of course. However, it went well. There were many, many people there including some from Jo's family, from Jerry's family, from John's family, from Leeroy's family, and many others from her church and school. The school let her classmates out to attend and most of them did so. Two or three times, Tressa's bishop commented--with some surprise, perhaps--on the size of the crowd. Tressa's grandfathers both reminisced, Jerry Chandler in person, Gene Wood on tape. Jack sang "Abide With Me" and her youth group sang “I Walk by Faith”. Her youth leader from church talked about his experiences with her. Renee decided that she felt strong enough to go to the cemetery after all. The trek to the cemetery turned out to be just that, a trek, and Renee returned to the hospital immediately afterwards. Nonetheless, it is a lovely place and Tressa's close to her great-grandmother and name-sake, Tressa Chandler. Tressa was well-loved. And she was respected. I guess that isn't an attribute that comes to mind when speaking of most 13-year olds, but it was quite clear to me that everyone who knew her felt that way.

thought I would send an update about Renee. she is progressing so well. she can transfer herself from her chair to the therapy table or her bed with a minimum of help. she is learning to dress herself with a stick that has a hook on it to pull up her pants, etc. she got to go to lunch at a nearby cafe on thurs with others in the therapy group.she pushed herself most of the way. she is gaining upperbody strength. her left toes moved on sun. I understand movement and control starts at the point of the fracture and moves downward, so it is a big thing to have toe movement. most of the bruises have gone, but she is on a heavy dose of cumidan, blood thinner, so she gets new bruises exceptionally easy. the latest prognosis of time in rehab is about seven more weeks, then change. probably to my house or her dad's for several months. thank you all again for prayers and help. please keep praying as this will be a trial for a long time to come. love to all

No one has posted for a while. it is hard to sit still and type. We are good. Renee is getting stronger every day. She can get herself upright in bed, and get from her bed to the wheelchair virtually without help. An incredible improvement in a very short time. She can also get into my Frontier truck, so she is coming to my house for several hours on Sunday on a pass. She has therapy for about 5 hours every day with a shortened schedule on Sat. She has two hours tomorrow. She has learned to almost dress herself without help. We are going shopping for new shoes on Sun. She is starting to more openly grieve, although her night tech told me that she catches her crying in the night. as her body heals, she is starting the emotional process. We got her a laptop, so she can do some of her work from home, she is wanting to do that. We are expecting that she will live her for at the least six months, maybe up to a year to continue therapy. If you have her E-mail address, she needs messages. I don't know them off hand, but I will look them up and post them. I want to thank you all again for your support and love. Please keep praying for her and all of us. JoAnna

News came from the Mission president late last night. I forwarded the email to many of you. Josh is going to be fine. He ran into a parked truck. I am not clear yet whether that caused his injuries or whether he was then hit by another vehicle. It was his hand that required surgery but he came out of it fine. The message says they are making arrangements for him to stay in the field and continue his mission, possibly in the mission home I am guessing. Letters or cards addressed to the mission home would be appreciated. Thank you for all your calls and concern. Love to all.

Aaron, Sheila and Gage are still in Hawaii and still loving it. They are not coming back yet, but Aaron says he will graduate from Evergreen College (here in Washington) in June. I did want to insert a word in Becky's "ad" about the piano - it is an upright concert grand, so not much more floor space than a regular piano. Google the Sterling Piano Company to see similar ones. I do hope it can find a family home if Becky can no longer keep it. It's a beautiful antique and would be worth the effort to move it. ... Catching up on all these pages brings back so many memories. I do have pictures that I will try to get to George soon. Love, Anna

I received this email tonight from Becky Hepworth Walters. "Hi, Over the last 34 years I have had Grandmother Hepworths Sterling Concert Grand piano. I find that I am unable to move it any longer and have been thinking of finding a home. I was wondering if you had contact with any of the family that you could help me get the word out that I am looking for a home for her piano. It has been in my family for over 50 years but I would love to see it go to a home where it would be played and enjoyed. Anyway you could help I would appreciate it." Her phone number and email are available in the family pages.

We lost a dear friend to cancer today. We have known her for just a short time, but she has become a dear and treasured friend to Danell and I and the kids. We, I am sad at the lose. With Tressa passing so recently, the brevity of this earthly state has been brought distinctly to mind. I wanted to say this before, but I was hesitant to do it using this forum. Not now. You all need to know, that I know that life does not end with the death of one we hold dear. That eternal spirit that dwells within all of us lives on, and with death returns home to a loving Father in Heaven. I know this.

Since there is not much going on on the reunion page, I thought I'd put a little message here.. We will be there weekend of the 8th and 9th. As I understand, none of the "Elders" will be attending this year. That makes me pretty sad... guess they really are just getting.. older!!! Love to all

Hello everyone. Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers. I have not been able to read all of the posts until now. It's really weird to read about yourself from someone else's perspective. Congrats to all the graduates and achievements so far this year. Sorry I missed out on all the birthday cheers too. Good to hear from you Josh. Hope you're doing well. Rachel came to visit me this week and seems to be doing well. She had a hard time going back to school without her sister. It has been really hard on her and John. The full effect of my loss has just barely hit me since being home from the hospital. Not much time to mourn there. I had 2 really great priesthood blessings and know that is what kept me going while in the hospital. The physical pain was so great that I do not wish it on anyone. I know that I could not even have made it through all of this and surely would have given up long ago if it weren't for my faith and all of your prayers. Sorry that we won't make it to any reunions, maybe next year. Hope everyone is doing well. Hugs & kisses to all.

We just got home from NY, it was an exciting and eventful trip. The graduation and party were fantastic. Had a little car trouble on the way home so the funds disappeared and we can't get to Grover. Look for a picture of Samuel Matthewson's headstone on the fridge door soon. I found it with some help at a cemetery in PA. It was a most remarkable and amazing experience. My special thanks to my husband and son for letting me go and helping me find what I was looking for. Now the search continues for his wife, the elusive Phelena Jones Matthewson. For anyone who is confused, these people are the parents of my (our)grandmother, Anne P Hepworth. I felt a connection to the past and I'm sure there were loved ones who have passed on who were glad to see me there. It was just a joyous time. I believe Phelena is buried next to him, that's what Annie P write in her short biography, but there is no headstone for her. We searched the cemetery looking for her but no luck.

Well, we arrived back home today after spending some very QUIET time in The Valley...hint hint!! Between dad (Tom) and Ike, the plumbing was repaired and put to a point where it needn't be that worried about. Lots and lots of mowing and raking and watering..etc.etc. Spent time with Gramma at the Care Center. She looks just wonderful! There is starting to be some anxiety about the house and property, and coming from me, the 'next' generation, I truly believe that it is time we all sat down and had some serious debates. Ike has some ideas, hopefully Tom will share them. Anyhow.... Aunt Jo, this to shall pass. Please Give Uncle Leeroy a hug from us. Our love to all! Emma

I thought about calling each of you individually to share my news, but finally decided it would be easier (for me) to post it here and not have to make explanations to everyone one at a time. I have asked Rock to move out. He did not want to but has complied. There were many many troubles and issues and I finally reached a breaking point. I felt I had to protect myself and my sons and our future. Not to worry, there was no violence or abuse. Just a long long list of frustrations and disappointments and heartaches. I am a little depressed but mostly have a great sense of peace and relief so I know the decision is the correct one. David seems to be just fine with this developement. I think he feels relief from the stress and tension in the house. So, we shall see what this great adventure we call life brings for us next. I would appreciate your prayers though.

Now, I have a new assignment; develope better training material/plan for the next time. Everyone here is fine. Did you all get the email I sent with the articles from PA? We have the marriage date of Samuel and Philena Matthewson but how sad to learn of her mental condition. No wonder no one talked about her much.

The Web-Hosting Service which hosts our site recently made some software "upgrades" that broke the picture upload page (and probably some others that I haven't noticed yet.) I had to change that page to get it to work again, although it still needs some tweaks. Howver, you can upload new pictures again. Please help us get up to date with what's happening in your lives.

We had a wonderfully successful Eagle Project for Daniel on Tuesday. We planted 17 trees at the local high school. 15 gallon buckets, if that means anything to you. He supervised about 10 kids really well (after I supervised him a little). The district yard maintenance guy was very pleased with the job they did. Also for your consideration: I have a job interview tomorrow at a school teaching K-8 music. Not that I particularly want to go back to a public school job, but you got to do what you got to do. Say a prayer towards Manteca about 1:30 PDT. Thank you in advance. Our love to all.

He should even go home that night. he will only miss about a week of work. Will keep you updated. My love to all!

My dad is doing good when I talked to my mom last night. They did find a few small stones in the duct, so the doctor opened it up and removed them as well. He will be fine and should have no more problems. The dr.s did an EKG and found out that he had had a very small heart attack and it was old. So when he is feeling better they are going to follow up on that, but don't worry he is fine and the dr.s say he prob didn't even feel the attack and there is minimal damage to the heart.

Wednesday 8/16/2006 12:45:18 PM (PDT) Paula No Address Left
SInce Becky "spilled the beans" about Sam's possible MI, I will give some more information. FIrst of all, we haven't told mom yet, we want to wait until after all the testing, just FYI. Dr. Carter is not positive it was a heart attack, but there was an abnormality on the EKG that is routine before surgery. He wants to follow it up in case it was an attack, then they can put him on a medication, Vytorin or ZOcor, etc, to prevent another one. But because of dad's history, they wanted to make sure they are taking care of it. He is home, doing great. Is happy that he can eat again. We will keep you posted on the test results when they are done--after his surgery healing is over, about six weeks. P.S. I also agree Maynard should be the baby's name!!!!!

I am having a hard time believing my son is 30 as of last Monday (the 14th)! I have also been watching the wildfire situation in the northwest (I get daily updates at work). I keep sending little thoughts to keeping Allan C. safe and wondering if he has been working any of the fires my coworkers are on. He probl'y doesn't even remember me, but I care about each and every one of you. Nancy, can you send me what you have so far about Matthewson & Jones? Did you know there is a Jones of Wales tartan? I believe I traced Philena Jones' birth to New York City, but I haven't gotten farther than that yet. Have you? Sam, glad you're getting fixed up. I have had a couple of friends find much relief after having gall bladder surgery. And, Happy Birthday yesterday to Uncle Homer! Love and warm wishes to all. -Anna

Anna, I will be happy to email you the information I have found. I located a record of a Jones family on the 1860 census in Chester Co PA with a daughter Philena who was 6 yrs old. The timing would be about right since she was somewhat younger than Samuel who was born in 1840. I also have a son born on August 14th, he turned 23. I have been remiss in wishing happiness to all our August birthday babies. So a general Happy Birthday to you all. Dad would be 90 today. Beth, hang in there and call me if I can help out. JoAnna, I am going to Wyo for Mom's birthday, fly up and go with me. Paula, thank you for the update on Sam. Sam, love and well wishes. Josh has his release date, he will be home on December 19th. George, I am keeping my promise to you. Jack, when a door closes, a window opens. And everyone- I love you and treasure you all.

Hope everyone is good! Life here is busy. What a year, good moments and sad moments! Is it November yet? Just catching up quick and wanted to say congrats cousin Katey! You could go with Mr. Thomas’s philosophy and name the lad after some tough karate guy, maybe Segal or Van Damme, also like Attila, LOL! My favorite would be ‘Trout Fishing in America’! He might get teased a bit but it sure lays out a great destiny for the lad! So Anna, haven’t made it to the northwest yet. Have been lucky (-UN) enough to spend most the summer in Utah, Nevada and Colorado. Thanks for the well wishes and good thoughts and keep sending them! Also thanks to whomever it was in this fine family that passed out the common sense genes! Seems they come in quite handy in this job of mine! Oh yeah, what about the Christmas reunion? I’m really liking that idea!! Em or Amanda, tell ma sorry I haven’t called, just got back from a week and a half stint in the woods, will call tonight! Love you all!

No problem. The story of my name change is familiar to some people, but probably not everyone. It involves a 19 year kid and a drill sargeant who didn't have time to listen to an explanation as to why I used my middle name growing up.... I got used to it after a while.

I got some great news today. I interviewed for a music job awhile back (which I didn't get), but got called back Tuesday of this week to be interviewed for another opening with Manteca Unified School District. Long story short, I GOT THE JOB! Not that I particularly wanted to go back to a public school, but, we need the income, and I have frankly missed teaching music. Student counts are never stable with the Charter School, I need more dependable income. I will work part-time for the charter school, keeping my kids and a few others, but I am now the 4th-8th grade music, band, and choir teacher at August Knodt Elementary.

In talking to Jo today, she says that Renee is making remarkable progress. They are talking about moving her from the ICU to a regular hospital room sometime next week. She also wants everyone to remember John and his family in their grief. As Mom would say, "Think good thoughts." As of about 11:45am PDT, the only word on services for Tressa was that it would take place either Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday of next week. Jo also wanted to send everyone a huge hug and kiss, and her deepest feelings of gratitude for all that has been done, and continues to be done for Renee, Rachel, Jo and the rest of her family, and all so deeply impacted by the accident. Your love and support, prayers and thoughts are priceless. Keep them going.

I had an experience yesterday that I wanted to share with Allan's family & thought what an ideal way! While speaking with Allan on the phone a few nights ago, the subject of the young woman who was killed in the helicopter crash recently came up. She was a firefighter. Allan told me he knew her older brother and that he too was a firefighter. I talked of how proud I am at what Allan has chosen to do throughout these last years with protecting the Mother Earth & her residents (even though it did start out as a nice summertime job so he could be a ski bum in the winter!) Anyway....sorry to ramble...I met the young woman's brother yesterday. I was introduced by a previous SEICAA employee who knows Allan & myself. After giving my condolences, this man told me that Allan was one of his hero's & he had so much admiration & appreciation for Allan. WOW! For all of us who ever gets to have those moments...

Just in from Grampa Tom. Amber's baby, Clark, was born this morning. Mom and baby are doing fine.

Clark James Ovard came in at 8 lbs even and is 20 inches long. Handsome little guy. Amber is kind of miserable but doing OK. Tobin didn't have much interest in the little one. She mostly was worried about her Mom and wanted to stay close to James. I suppose she will adjust.

We are home safe and sound.. only to begin getting ready for our next trip! I just wanted to take a minute to say WOW!! What an awesome time in the Valley. I was mostly impressed with all the kids, from 2 years to 23 years! So very well behaved and with such good manners. There was only laughter and tears of joy all weekend. It couldn't have went any better. With plenty of Hum..n..p..hunter's stew and plumber's chicken to fill everyone with that warm 'Gramma's House' feeling. Gramma Anagene looked wonderful as she spent the better part of the day Saturday, just sitting and taking in all the kids, grandkids, and great grandkids around her. Even though the weather was a bit wet, it was a wonderful, wonderful weekend! Everyone traveling home, please do so in safety.. My love to all, Emma

Thank you to everyone who made the weekend so much FUN. And a huge thanks to Nancy and JoAnna for Hum/nters stew and Plumbers chicken. I can't remember when I had so much fun pushing the swing. All those beautiful, beautiful kids...

You're right Em, we did get home fine and returned Jane as well. The weekend just went so fast. On a sad note, Jimmy lost a dear friend in a car accident in New York yesterday. She was someone who stood by him when his depressions was at it's worst. I remember her as a child when we lived in NY. She was a sweet young woman.

Dearest Jimmy, our lives have so many ups and so many downs. No one or nothing can replace the loss of a loved one. Although we tend to try and find things that can fill the void, it's not always good things we find. Just remember that the power of words and wisdom by those who surround you and love you can help you through anything. Even if at the time, you don't believe! Glad everyone is returning home safely. My love to all, Emma

Obit in the Idaho State Journal 10/22/06 for Neil J. Tippets. Our own "Mr. Holland", died at home in Logan Utah of an apparent heart attack. He was 81. He remains a prominent figure in my memories of SV, and, I'm sure, of many others.

Sad news. Mr. Tippets was one of my heroes, growing up.

Monday 10/23/2006 5:16:16 PM (PDT) Nancy No Address Left
Mr Tippets was a wonderful mentor to me also. He once went to the school board and requested that I be allowed to be the accompanist for his girls choir and get a full credit for the class. He won them over and I am the only person in Star Valley history to have taken a class called Music Application and Performance. He also encouraged me to audition for the all Northwest Choir when I didn't think I had the ability. He helped me to be Gretl in the Sound of Music and coached me as Laurie in Oklahoma. I loved him and respected him. One of the choirs in heaven just got a great new director.

I wonder if I had the same band instructor as Al? I once witnessed a chair hitting a percussionist...I am glad most of you had someone so influential in your life.

Wednesday 10/25/2006 4:07:59 PM (PDT) Nancy No Address Left
a guy named Matthews suceeded Scott Schwab as band director in Star Valley. He had a terrible temper. I had the misfortune of substituting for him while I lived with Mom. His students hated and feared him. No wonder Becky and Alan have poor memories of their music experience. On a happier note, I just got a promotion and a small raise. I finally get to spend all my time coaching other reps as a member of the Comcast Quality Assurance Team. Yeah!!!

Ahh, so lucky you all are to be left with good memories of the band teacher. I am left with the memory of chalk and eraser flying through the air aimed for my head and computers getting tossed out of classroom windows. What a difference some people can make! I'm sure that these good influences were key in making all of you amazing people so amazing!

Foul temper and school of hard knocks is what Mr. Mathews was about. I agree Bec about learning to mind yourself! There is something to say about that, I couldn't ever be so harsh to another though so I guess a lesson was learned! On another note; I'm going to open up a request line here for anyone who would really like to taste some fine mule deer! Basically the little guy had been reared on the farm and will really be savored! Please let me know if I could put a chunk of dried ice on a couple slabs and mail your way! Dear pops has my number and I would really appreciate sharing this amazing animal with you all!

Hi, Anna. That swing, and the tree which supported it, are long gone. The new swing is in the back, hanging from a willow that we planted as kids. Ike & Emma and Kiya and Koby stopped by our house yesterday on their way back to Idaho. It was fun, but the visit was too short.

Just a quick note to tell you all that truly amazing Renee bought a car on Saturday and is now able to drive herself where she needs to go. I am in awe of her. Jerry's arm is recovering nicely. the weather in Phoenix is great now, 85degrees, hope all is well. it is so good to hear from you Anna. Oh my.. We are finally home! We left on the 16th and pulled in around 5 am yesterday morning. Our adventurous vacation was nothing short of perfect! With countless stops the way there and the way home, my kids were just angels! I believe we went through most of our clothes before we even got to Washington! (Beaches and sand and dirt and muck) The stay was wonderful the visit was heart-felt, and the adventures were many! Ike's family was gracious and generous and kept us very busy. His Grandmother and Aunt from Japan fell in love with Kiya and Koby and vice versa... to many stories to tell on here.. but we had fun, and made it home safely... stopping to see HBWM on our way. As he said wonderful but too short a visit. Am glad to see everyone seems to be doing well.. and Allan, dearest brother, as you know my husband considers himself a good hunter. And although he's come home the last 5 years with nothing but a hunters smile, it becomes depressing. So I think it would be a wonderful thing for him to eat some good ole deer, just to get the taste in his mouth! Thanks for the offering!! My love to all... Em

Just spoke briefly with "Little" Jerry, JoAnna, AND Renee. Renee has MOVEMENT in her legs and feet, but there is still swelling of the spinal cord. While the doctors remain "guarded" in her prognosis, she has improved physically. I will let others closer to the situation pass on more information, but, she seems to be doing better. Keep up the prayers, the good karma, whatever... she has a long road to travel yet. The arrangments for Tressa are supposed to be decided upon this afternoon. It does not appear that anything will be taking place anytime soon. But, again, others more in the know will fill in the details. Our love to all.

A pool sounds fun. Did everybody see the notice on the home page for the chat sunday?! Oh, and congrats JR and Katey. You have a name picked out? Also, I really enjoy the different thoughts that HBWM posts on this page. Wonderful stuff. BTW... did not get the teaching job. Really mediocre interview. They were looking for someone with a strong band background, not a vocal.

I got a one. Mine probably isn't as good as some suggested, but...It combines Katey's and JR's name. MARYNARD Jr. Dad is doing good, sore but tired. JR and some Matt dude is fixing our plumbing this weekend and Dad says that he feels helpless because he isn't allowed to help, but otherwise he is doing good. Me, on the other hand is very stressed. I was in a car accident on Tueday. I am fine physically but my car isn't. It was a fender-bender and I hit him, but the other guy drove away. Man have I been stressed this week. I send my love to all!

Love to you all.

Hello, all. Wish I could have been with you for your gathering for Aunt Anagene's birthday celebration. George, do you mean the tire swing on the tree in the corner by the ditch? I really remember that. And the mention of ice cream brought back one of my favorite memories of when the store was where the garage is and Uncle Allan gave me and Joanna and Wendy each an ice cream cone with three (!!!) flavors! I think we were about 6, 5, and 4 (Jo, me, Wendy). Do you remember that Joanna? We might have been older, maybe one of the times we were visiting on vacation, but I don't think so. So many good memories of early childhood are from being with you cousins in that house and yard. Love, Anna (Mary Alice, then)

Sam and politics... the two are synonemous (sp). Had a interesting experience. As many know, I am involved in a multi-stake production entitled "Savior of the World". One of my fellow shepherds is a transplant from Idaho. I came to find out the he is the brother-in-law of one Layne Porter, formerly of Grover, and currently of Provo. Brent (the fellow shepherd) forwarded an email he got from Layne enquiring if her remembered me, which of course he did. Layne said he had fond memories of our Mom, and of the family.

I quess Fawn and Von have moved back to the Valley. I saw them at Dixie's funeral. They were looking for a place just before she became very ill. Good to see your memory is still sharp. What became of Roger?

Friday 11/10/2006 (PDT) George No address left
Kind words, but the "sharp memory" also tends to be highly selective about the things it remembers. Lyndsey frequently complains that I can't recall any of the names of the most recent candidates for boy friend. I have resorted to calling them all "Eric", which was the name of the original applicant. It has the added benefit of keeping them on their guard around me. Yes, we saw Von and Fawn at Katie's (Sam's daughter) wedding reception in Afton last year. They have retired and are living in Afton now. I can't say what happened with Roger.
